The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga, through the Home for Girls, conducted a Parent & Child Encounter on September 30, 2025, at the LMX Convention Center, Butuan City, as part of the National Filipino Family Week 2025 celebration.
The event gathered 18 out of 22 parents, guardians, and family members of the residents. They were joined by all 22 residents of the Home for Girls, along with house parents, social workers, and other staff. The activity was designed to promote family solidarity and underscore the vital role of families and caregivers in the growth and healing of children under the center’s care.
As part of the activity, a Trauma-Informed Care session was facilitated by Ms. Krystel Sheen Quiaman. The session provided parents and guardians with a deeper understanding of how trauma affects children and emphasized the importance of compassion, patience, and consistent support in helping the girls recover and thrive.
In her message, Protective Services Division (PSD) Chief Jessie Catherine Aranas expressed gratitude to the parents and families for their presence, stressing that family involvement is essential in the residents’ recovery journey.
The highlight of the activity was the heartfelt giving of handmade cards from the residents to their parents, guardians, and even to the house parents, social workers, and staff of the Home for Girls. The gesture served as an expression of gratitude and love, recognizing both family members and the dedicated staff who provide daily care and guidance to the residents.
One parent expressed appreciation for the institution’s support, saying, “Salamat kaayo sa Home for Girls sa pagdawat ug pagtabang sa amoa labi na sa akong anak.”
A resident also offered a touching message: “Salamat sa inyong pagpaminaw, pagsabot, ug sa pagpaningkamot.”
The Parent & Child Encounter is a regular initiative of the Home for Girls, conducted every year to provide residents with the opportunity to reconnect with their families in a supportive setting. Beyond the reunions, the activity strengthens relationships between residents and their caregivers, reinforcing the Home’s mission of nurturing children in need of protection and preparing them for eventual reintegration into society.
Through activities like this, the Home for Girls continues to embody DSWD’s commitment to promoting family unity and creating an environment where children can heal, grow, and build a brighter future with the support of both their families and the professionals entrusted with their care.
