Stakeholders, tutors, parents, and learners were at the forefront of discussions during the first Regional Project Implementation Review (RPIR) of the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program, held on September 17–19, 2025, at the Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center, Butuan City, where testimonies and shared experiences are set to shape improvements in the program’s rollout across Caraga.
The three-day activity convened representatives from the Local Government Unit of Butuan City, Surigao del Norte State University–Del Carmen Campus, Caraga State University–Main Campus, the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Butuan City, DepEd Division of Siargao (Dapa West District, Dapa East District, and General Luna District), along with parents, tutors, youth development workers, and staff from the regional and national program management offices.
The activity featured workshops and discussions that assessed the program’s gains and challenges, with tutors, parents, and learners sharing testimonies alongside updates and recommendations from partner institutions. Some beneficiaries also shared their personal stories, highlighting the positive impact of the program.
Tutor Rudy Fabe, Jr. reflected on his experience, saying, “In the process, I learned that tutoring wasn’t just about teaching. My tutees also became my teachers. They taught me patience; to truly listen to their stories so I could understand and adapt to their needs.”
For learners, the program has sparked confidence and excitement for learning. Pupil Jacob Coopera expressed his gratitude, saying, “Because of you, I have become better at reading, and I am even more excited to learn new things.”
The Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program aims to bridge learning gaps among elementary pupils while strengthening parental involvement through Nanay-Tatay learning sessions. By combining tutoring support with family engagement, it seeks to improve children’s academic performance and overall well-being.
Findings from the RPIR will help refine strategies for learning sessions, mentorship support, and parent-focused activities. Results will also serve as a baseline for the possible expansion and replication of the program in more communities across Caraga.
