DSWD Caraga staff converse with families taking shelter in the sewer.
The Angels in Red Vests of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga reached out to seven families in Dinagat, Province of Dinagat Islands, who sought temporary refuge in a nearby sewer at the height of Typhoon Tino.
The families shared that they stayed there because it felt safer and closer to their homes. They recalled that during Super Typhoon Odette, taking shelter in the same area had protected them from strong winds and flying debris.
Barangay officials, upon learning of the situation, immediately checked on the families and continuously reminded them to prioritize their safety. Their coordination with DSWD ensured that the families were closely monitored throughout the typhoon’s impact.
As of this writing, all seven families, including the children, have safely returned to their homes with no reported damages.
The DSWD Field Office Caraga, in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Dinagat, will provide the families with Family Food Packs (FFPs) as part of the Department’s ongoing relief and recovery efforts, a reminder that in times of crisis, you can always seek refuge in DSWD Caraga.
