In the heart of Libjo, a municipality in Dinagat Islands, the commitment to uplifting marginalized communities has found a strong ally in Gawad Kalinga (GK), a Philippine Non-Governmental Organization led by Executive Director Dan Bercasio. Gawad Kalinga, known for its dedication to “poverty alleviation and nation-building,” has been steadfast in its mission to empower communities by addressing the root causes of poverty. This NGO has not only been a beacon of hope for the residents of Libjo but has also become a driving force for change, particularly for indigent families and children.
For over four years, Gawad Kalinga has been a pillar of support for the Dinagatnons, stepping in with timely aid during crises such as the aftermath of Super Typhoon Odette. During that challenging period, GK provided basic necessities like food packs and essential supplies, ensuring that the affected families could begin their journey towards recovery. The organization’s ongoing efforts go far beyond emergency response, focusing on long-term community development and fostering hope among the people of Dinagat Islands. In Libjo, the foundation has taken a particular interest in the educational needs of disadvantaged young learners, providing them with opportunities to continue their studies despite financial hardships.

One of the most notable endeavors of Gawad Kalinga in Libjo took place in July 2024, when the Municipal Operations Office (MOO), in partnership with GK, launched an outreach program known as “AGAK 2024.” This initiative targeted the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries and began in Brgy. Kanihaan—a remote island barangay considered one of the most disadvantaged areas in the locality.
This outreach effort brought much-needed school supplies—bags, notebooks, pencils, crayons, and more—to seventy-five children in Brgy. Kanihaan, as well as other remote areas like Sitio McArthur in Brgy. Rosita and Sitio Cabalawan in Brgy. Garcia. The joy and gratitude expressed by the children, as they eagerly accepted the school supplies, were a testament to the program’s success and impact.
Mr. Keith Harold Amoroto, a local GK Community Organizer, acted as as bridge to GK for the support needed for MOO Libjo’s Convergence Initiative, specifically for the provision of school bags, educational materials and school supplies for 4Ps monitored children who are recipient of this initiative.
The smiles on the faces of the young beneficiaries reflected the true reward for everyone involved in this outreach effort. From planning to execution, the project faced numerous challenges, particularly in reaching the island barangays where sea travel was the only mode of transportation. Yet, the team’s perseverance paid off as they witnessed the children’s genuine happiness and appreciation. Gawad Kalinga’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of the 4Ps families in Libjo, through educational support and other community-building initiatives, has transformed the lives of many, laying a foundation of hope for a better future.
Looking ahead, Gawad Kalinga’s efforts in Libjo continue, with Mr. Keith Amoroto at the lead, eager to bring more opportunities to the community. His dedication to proposing and implementing new projects underlines the NGO’s enduring mission: to not only alleviate poverty but also to empower the next generation to break free from its cycle. In partnership with local government units and other stakeholders, Gawad Kalinga remains a steadfast force for positive change, proving that a united community—driven by compassion—can overcome even the greatest of challenges.
