This Women’s Month, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga highlights the story of Elvie Orzales of Madrid, Surigao del Sur-a solo parent whose journey reflects resilience, determination, and a mother’s unwavering love.
Raising four children on her own, Elvie faced one of the most difficult chapters of her life after separating from her partner. With no stable home and limited resources, she took on both the role of mother and provider, striving to rebuild her life while ensuring her children’s needs were met.
Despite the challenges, Elvie chose to move forward.
Her strength was shaped early in life. As a young student, she learned to survive by making and selling coconut candy using simple ingredients she could afford. What started as a means to get by would later become the foundation of her livelihood.
As a beneficiary of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), Elvie received support that helped sustain her children’s education and daily needs during difficult times. The program became a steady source of assistance, allowing her to keep her children in school.
Determined to improve her situation, she also became part of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), where she received ₱15,000 under the Seed Capital Fund (SCF). With this support, she was able to strengthen her small business and expand her production.
Today, Elvie is a registered entrepreneur with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Her products -Cocopeanut Candy (Balikostsa), Camote Candy, Bukhayo Candy, Peñato, and Peanut Roll are now being sold in local establishments such as La Vecchia Spiaggia, the Negosyo Center of DTI Tandag, TT & Company, and San Vicente Store. She has also started receiving bulk orders, helping sustain her family’s daily needs.
Despite her progress, Elvie remains focused on her goal: to provide for her children and support their education.
Her journey reflects how determination, combined with government support, can create opportunities for change.
This Women’s Month, DSWD Field Office Caraga honors Elvie Orzales – a solo parent whose strength continues to transform hardship into hope.
