In a significant move towards peace and reintegration, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga has recently provided financial assistance to 29 former rebels in Barangay Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte. Each beneficiary received Php10,000.00, underlining the government’s commitment to supporting individuals seeking to return to civilian life.
This initiative is part of the broader efforts to foster peace and development in conflict-affected areas, aligning with the peace agenda set forth by Executive Order No. 70 series of 2018. The Executive Order emphasizes a whole-of-nation approach to achieving sustainable peace, with DSWD playing a crucial role through its various programs and services designed for Former Rebels (FRs).
The cash assistance program was coordinated with the 30th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, ensuring a smooth and secure distribution process. This collaboration highlights the synergy between government agencies and the armed forces in addressing the root causes of insurgency and facilitating the integration of former rebels into society.
DSWD’s ongoing commitment to the peace agenda is evident in its active pursuit of programs that promote inclusive growth and sustainable development, particularly for those who have decided to abandon armed struggle and embrace a peaceful civilian life. Through such initiatives, DSWD aims to not only provide immediate financial relief but also to open doors for more comprehensive support, including livelihood opportunities, education, and psychosocial services, among others.
As the department continues to work hand in hand with various stakeholders, the hope for a more peaceful and progressive Caraga region, free from the clutches of conflict, grows stronger. These efforts underscore the importance of compassion, understanding, and collective action in building a society where everyone, including former rebels, can look forward to a future filled with opportunities and dignity.
