A handful of products crafted by different Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs) across the Caraga region were exhibited during the Alunsina Kabuhayan Convention and Bazaar 2024 on August 29, 2024, at Risen Garden, Quezon City Hall.

Associations from the provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte (mainland) displayed their food products, the Banana Chips of Hinandayan Farmers SLPA and the Payaw, Mango, and Ube Tart of Sison Tart SLPA. On the other hand, the associations from Siargao Island, Surigao del Sur, and Province of Dinagat Islands exhibited their non-food handmade products, which were the Mat Petati of Caridad Mat Weavers SLPA, the wooden culinary tools and display figures of Madayaw Cambatong SLPA, and the plastic rattan bags, baskets, and purses of the Rattan Handweavers SLP Association, which bagged the Sulong Bayanihan Awards 2021, Gawang Kamay Category.

The said products boasted approximately 17,000 pesos gross income in the bazaar, which were also sold through online via live selling.

“This is not just a bazaar; Alunsina projects a long-lasting relationship with the participants that will help them grow and succeed. Together, we can make a significant contribution to their lives and the betterment of the community,” Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Assistant Secretary for Specialized Program under Operations Group Florentino Loyola said during his opening message.

The word Alunsina is a name of a prominent goddess in the Panay Pantheon of Gods. Alunsina, also called “Laun-Sina,” is considered to be the virgin goddess of the eastern skies and the wife of Tungkung Langit (“Pillar of Heaven”), in a version of the creation myth found in the Panay Island of the Visayas.

Joseph Rey Cabansag, SLP-Caraga’s Provincial Capability-Building Project Development Officer for Dinagat Islands, shared his thoughts on presenting the local products of their province.

“Participating in the ALUNSINA Bazaar was a remarkable experience, as it provided a valuable platform to showcase the diverse and innovative products crafted by the associations under our Sustainable Livelihood Program,” Cabansag stated.

He further emphasized the amount of pride and exhilaration he felt on being part of the said activity.

“I felt an immense sense of pride and honor in presenting these products, knowing they represent the hard work, creativity, and resilience of our communities. The opportunity to display these locally-made goods not only highlighted the skills and dedication of our program participants but also reinforced our commitment to supporting sustainable development and uplifting livelihoods,” he added.

The event was initiated to convene SLP Associations across the country to promote their products on a broader platform. Region VI will be the host region for next year’s Alunsina Kabuhayan Convention and Bazaar.
