The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga has successfully facilitated the reintegration of “Amalia” and “Maribeth” into their home in Barangay Buhisan, San Agustin, Surigao del Sur, following a harrowing experience in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The journey to their homecoming began with a desperate search for employment in Metro Manila. Tragically, Amalia and Maribeth fell victim to fraudulent “hiring” agencies, leaving them stranded and penniless. Their ordeal led them to seek refuge in the church of Baclaran, where their remaining meager possessions were stolen.

Facing extreme hardship, compassionate individuals directed them to the Pasay City social welfare office. There, they found temporary respite and sustenance at the Walang Gutom Kitchen. The DSWD, through its Pag-abot Program, stepped in to provide crucial assistance, recognizing their vulnerable situation.

After the DSWD had assisted them in the NCR, DSWD Field Office Caraga then took over the process of their final reintegration.

On February 19, 2025, DSWD personnel, including Social Welfare Officer II Ms. Kareen Godalle and Project Development Officer II Ms. Maegie Baldonasa from the National Program Management Office (NPMO), accompanied Amalia and Maribeth on their return. Arriving at Butuan City Airport at 6:10 AM, they were warmly welcomed by the DSWD Caraga Team.

A crucial case conference was held at the San Agustin Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), attended by Social Welfare Officer II Therese Kay C. Layson from MSWDO San Agustin, and family members of Amalia, and other DSWD personnel. This meeting ensured a coordinated and supportive reintegration process.

The DSWD is pleased to report that Amalia has been warmly welcomed back into her family home, a testament to the effectiveness of the Pag-abot Program. This successful reintegration underscores the program’s commitment to assisting vulnerable individuals and families, particularly those who have experienced exploitation and hardship.

The Pag-abot Program continues to demonstrate its vital role in providing a safety net for those in need, offering hope and a pathway to a better future.
