As the implementation of Project LAWA at BINHI continues in the Caraga region this year, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga has begun the first phase of its 20-day rollout. This stage is a three-day Learning and Development Session focused on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation – Disaster Risk Reduction (CCAM-DRR) awareness for local communities.
The barangays of Mandus and San Roque in Lingig, Surigao del Sur are the first to start the project, with 175 partner beneficiaries in each barangay, totaling 350 participants.
Project LAWA at BINHI, or the Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished, is part of the Risk Resiliency Program (RRP). It seeks to combat hunger, alleviate poverty, and reduce economic vulnerability by addressing food and water insecurity, which has been worsened by climate change and disasters.
In partnership with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources, Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and Municipal Agriculture Office, during the 3-day training, beneficiaries will learn about climate change mitigation, including practical ways to reduce their environmental impact. They will also be introduced to the projects they will undertake in the next phase, which include Communal Gardening, Fruit-bearing tree Planting, Cultivation of disaster-resilient crops, Construction of small farm reservoirs and Fish farming.
The compensation for partner beneficiaries is determined starting from Stage 1 of the implementation, which includes the three-day training. It is calculated based on the regional daily minimum wage of Php 385, as stipulated in the work and financial plan at the time of the project’s approval.
