In adherence to Proclamation No. 731, issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos in 1996, designating the second week of February as “National Awareness Week for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation,” the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga Home for Girls has extended its observance throughout the entire month of February 2024 as Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.

Under the theme “Break the Silence, Stop Child Sexual Abuse!” this initiative aims to raise awareness about the prevalent issue of child sexual abuse and exploitation among staff, residents, and the wider community. The proclamation underscores the gravity of child sexual abuse as a profound violation of children’s rights, its underreporting due to sensitivity, and the urgent need for preventive measures.

Throughout the month, the DSWD-Home for Girls has organized various education, empowerment, and advocacy activities. These include sessions led by case managers, addressing critical topics such as abuse preconditions, early warning signs of child sexual abuse, and the establishment of appropriate boundaries through “Touching Rules.” These sessions aim to equip residents with the knowledge and tools to safeguard themselves from abuse.

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, discussions on child sexual abuse prevention have been extended to the families of residents and referring parties. By disseminating awareness and understanding about the signs and risks of abuse, the initiative seeks to foster a safer environment for children within the center and their broader communities.

In addition to educational sessions, residents of the Home for Girls have showcased their talents and creativity as a means of expression. Through poster-making activities, they have crafted compelling visual messages to raise awareness about the issue and encourage others to join the fight against child sexual abuse. Furthermore, they delivered a poignant dance performance to the song “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten, symbolizing their resilience and determination to overcome challenges.

Through these activities, the DSWD-Home for Girls aims to convey an unwavering message of empowerment and solidarity in the fight against child sexual abuse. By engaging residents, families, staff, and the wider community, they strive to break the silence surrounding this issue and foster a safer and more protective environment for all children.
