In today’s world, many parents share the responsibility of raising a child, but some do it alone – solo parents. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga understands solo parents’ challenges and the importance of their role in society.

Ms. Reysthy Gundaya, the Solo Parents Focal Person of DSWD Caraga’s Sectoral Unit under the Protective Services Division (PSD), is at the forefront of supporting solo parents. Being a registered social worker, she displays the empathy and understanding required to cater to the unique needs of solo parents. This year, the mission is clear: to raise awareness and encourage all solo parents to register and obtain their government-issued Solo Parents ID, which would unlock a gateway to essential support services provided under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022 (Republic Act 11861).

RA 11861 leaves no solo parent behind. Orientation on the law to Local Government Units (LGUs) is the Agency’s top priority to make the community understand their rights and ensure an efficient implementation at the local level. Moreover, through seamless coordination with other National Government Agencies, DSWD guarantees equal access to quality services, empowering solo parents to fulfill their roles effectively.

A key point emphasized by Ms. Gundaya is the inclusivity of solo parenting. Contrary to popular belief, solo parents come from all walks of life and are not limited by gender. Fathers, grandparents, and other guardians also navigate the challenges of solo parenting, underscoring the need for a gender-neutral approach to support and advocacy.

In relation to this year’s Solo Parent Week theme: “Solo Parent na Rehistrado, sa Gobyerno Tiyak na Protektado!”, Ms. Gundaya’s message to solo parents is empowerment and resilience, “Seeking support is not a sign of weakness; instead, it is a demonstration of strength, acknowledging and recognizing everything you do in raising your child/children alone.” She encourages Solo Parents to contact DSWD Field Office Caraga if they have questions and reach out to their local social welfare and development offices (LSWDOs), where they can learn more about the registration process for getting a Solo Parent ID.

As we celebrate Solo Parents Week, let’s wrap our arms around the incredible solo parents in our community. This week is more than a celebration; it’s a heartfelt acknowledgment of their resilience and strength. Let’s renew our pledge to stand by them, offering our untiring support and advocacy, reminding solo parents that they are far from alone on their journey.
