A total of 1,649 newly validated beneficiaries of the Walang Gutom Program successfully redeemed their first food credits on January 14-15, 2025, across municipalities in Surigao del Norte. This marks a significant milestone for the program, which aims to combat hunger and promote healthier communities.
Each eligible household received ₱3,000 worth of food credits, loaded onto their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. These credits can be used at partner merchants of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to purchase high-nutrition food items, including a balanced mix of 50% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 20% fiber. The goal is to provide families with access to nutritious foods that support their well-being.
The Walang Gutom Program, which was rolled out in late 2024, is not a traditional dole-out initiative. To remain eligible, beneficiaries must meet key conditions, such as Participation in Monthly Nutrition Education Sessions. These sessions aim to instill positive behavioral changes and equip families with skills to prepare nutritious meals.
Beneficiaries must also engage in Employment Promotion Activities to maintain their eligibility in the Walang Gutom Program. Beneficiaries are encouraged to attend job fairs or skills training programs offered by TESDA (Technical Education and Skills
Development Authority) to enhance their livelihood opportunities.
The Walang Gutom program is designed to go beyond food assistance, fostering long-term sustainable development by empowering families with the knowledge and skills needed for healthier, more resilient lives.
The successful distribution of food credits in Surigao del Norte serves as a model for the broader national initiative, which aims to alleviate hunger, improve nutrition, and strengthen communities throughout the country.
