Butuan City – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga strongly supported the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as they showcased their skills in the recently concluded Kakayahan 2014 Skills Competition during the 2014 National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week celebration.

The celebration which highlighted the government’s efforts to address the needs affecting PWDs aimed at recognizing their sector’s role in nation building.

DSWD- Caraga Regional Director Minda B. Brigoli said that the theme of this year’s celebration encourages the PWDs to be determined in using their God-given talents and knowledge them to be successful in their chosen field.

Through a healthy competition, the PWDs showcased their various talents and skills in the field of Photography, Webpage Creation, Desktop Publishing, and English Text Publishing.

The following were the winners of the different “Kakayahan 2014” skills competition which was held in Butuan City for the  Photography category – Joebert Tapales from Magallanes, Agusan del Norte; Creation of Webpages Category – Michael Dumineses of Cabadbaran City; Desktop Publishing Category –  Jesus Leris from Cabadbaran City; and English Text Publishing – Francisco Gumapas, Jr. of Romulo T. Romualdez (RTR).

The regional winners are the representative of Caraga for the incoming National Competition for the Kakayahan 2014.

PWD Caraga Regional President Delfin M. Antallan said that they are thankful to partner agencies for their support.

“PWDs are also skillful and competitive. Thank you so much for providing us a venue to showcase our God-given gifts.” he added.

Furthermore, during the PWD General Assembly on July 25, 2014 at Prince Hotel, Butuan City, the National Council on Disability Affair (NCDA) Executive Director, Carmen R. Zubiaga and City Councilor, Ferdinand Nalcot attended the activity.  Director Zubiaga intensely advocated the PWDs’ rights and privileges.

“I hope every PWD like me will realize that we are not a burden in the society. We have our own talents and skills that are significant; we only have to believe in ourselves and prove our worth.” Zubiaga stressed.

The Kakayahan 2014 regional competition was made successful in partnership with the regional line agency, Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

With the theme, “NDPR 2014: Talino at Paninindigan: Pasaporte sa Kaunlaran”, the NDPR Week was successfully held on July 17-25, 2014. (### Social Marketing Unit/ DSWD FO Caraga)
