In the serene side of Purok 5, Barangay. Sta. Cruz, Carmen, Surigao del Sur, Carmelo Merza resides. At the age of 56 years old he embodies the qualities of a model father, combining his roles as a diligent farmer, devoted public servant, and loving family man. With unwavering dedication and a heart full of love, Carmelo has worked tirelessly to provide for his family and serves his community with selflessness and integrity. Carmelo’s inspiring journey reminds us of the profound impact a loving and hardworking father can have on his family and society.
Carmelo is the husband of Marivic Merza, an active Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) member, who have five children. Carmelo Sr. was not able to finish his studies and only graduated in high school due to poverty.
However, Carmelo’s commitment to his family’s welfare is evident through his dedication as a farmer. He wakes up at dawn, ready to prepare the rice fields and engage in essential tasks like plowing, sowing, and harvesting. Regardless of the weather conditions or physical demands, Carmelo perseveres to ensure an abundant harvest that will sustain his loved ones. His tireless efforts demonstrate his strong work ethic and determination to provide a better life for his family.
In addition to his farming responsibilities, Carmelo selflessly serves his community. For eight years, he acted as the Purok President, leading his community with integrity and compassion. Carmelo’s role as the President of the Bajojo Irrigation Association from 2017 to 2022 further exemplifies his commitment to the welfare of fellow farmers. Additionally, he actively participated as the chairman of the Sub Project Management Committee under the Kalahi Program from 2016- 2018, and to this day, he continues to volunteer in various capacities, including purchasing of farm products for Carmen Farmer Market.
As the head of the family, Carmelo takes his responsibilities seriously. He ensures that their needs are met, both financially and emotionally, and takes proactive steps to create a stable and secure environment for his loved ones. He also leads by example and instills strong values in his family. He upholds honesty, integrity, and respect, setting a positive moral foundation for his children to follow.
Thus, he promotes open communication, resolves conflicts with patience and understanding, and encourages strong bonds among family members. Carmelo consistently puts the needs of his family before his own. He selflessly sacrifices his time, energy, and resources to ensure their happiness and well-being. Overall, Carmelo’s qualities of love, support, responsibility, dedication, moral character, fostering harmony, and selflessness make him a remarkable figure when it comes to his family.
