TUBAY, AGUSAN DEL NORTE- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga, in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and Local Government Unit of Tubay has successfully conducted the Skills Enhancement Training for the Community GARDEnPH beneficiaries on October 23-24, 2023.

Prior to the actual demonstration, the beneficiaries undergo lecture about Urban Gardening

The Community Generative Action towards Reformative Development and Ending Poverty and Hunger or Community GARDEnPH is a community-driven development action that aims to mitigate hunger through community organization and mindset transformation.

A total of 20 families benefitted from the program’s pilot implementation. These families are farmers but belong to low-income families and non-Pantawid members who are currently experiencing involuntary hunger.

On the 1st day, representatives from the ATI discussed Urban Gardening; Crop Care Management and Maintenance; and Organic Fertilizer and Pesticide Production. These topics are integral to the success of the local farmers. These practices support food security, sustainability, environmental conservation, and community development.

Using the meter tape, the farmers are making a pathway from the square foot gardening.

On the 2nd day, the local farmers demonstrated the four types of Urban Gardening during the actual demonstration in Barangay Poblacion 2 in the municipality of Tubay, Agusan del Norte.

Also, as part of the three day activity, the selected beneficiaries visited the Ragas Farm and Guias Farm situated in Cabadbaran and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte respectively.

Community GARDEnPH, which focuses on increasing the availability and accessibility of nutritious vegetables, can be a powerful tool in the fight against hunger among poor individuals and families. By providing fresh, affordable, and locally grown vegetables, this initiative addresses these vulnerable populations’ immediate nutritional needs and long-term food security.

Representative from DSWD, ATI, and LGU Tubay, together with the GARDeNPH beneficiaries, are all smiles after the initial completion of their version of urban gardening.
