Set against the backdrop of Socorro’s coastal landscape, where the rhythmic ebb and flow of the sea reflect the challenges faced by its residents, unfolds a narrative of resilience and community empowerment.

As the year drew to a close, the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) Program bestowed a gift with a nuance of silver lining upon the municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte, through its Cash-for-Work (CFW) program on December 29, 2023.

In a strategic maneuver aimed at addressing socio-economic disparities, the implemented Cash-for-Work program has successfully provided assistance to over 2,160 eligible families in the municipality. With an approximate allocation of Php 7,560,000, this program seeks to be instrumental in alleviating financial burdens and fostering sustainable development within the community.

The short-term allowance is earned through a variety of work, including declogging of canals, participation in clean-up drives, tree planting initiatives, and road clearing activities. Each beneficiary dedicated a minimum of 10 days to these meaningful projects, contributing to the betterment of the community and earning their well-deserved allowances.

The beneficiaries of this program represent a cross-section of society—individuals and families grappling with economic disadvantages. The financial injection into this municipality is envisioned to create a ripple effect, with the funds not merely serving as financial relief but as an investment in the community’s long-term development.

The success of this Cash-for-Work program stands as a testament to the collaborative and tireless efforts between the Regional Program Management Office, Municipal and Barangay Local Government Units, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the community of Socorro. Through careful planning and execution, this initiative aspires to become a catalyst for change, demonstrating that targeted interventions can significantly contribute to the well-being of vulnerable populations.
