Turning a hundred years old is a feat not everyone gets to witness. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga is always immensely proud to honor centenarians from the region.

Lola Gregoria Guibone, who turned 100 years old on May 25, 2024, was honored with a Php100,000.00 cash gift from the Field Office’s Centenarian Program.

Expressing her sentiment, Lola Gregoria’s daughter, Teresita, thanked DSWD Field Office Caraga for the meaningful recognition. She reflected on her mother’s hard work as a fish vendor, which provided the means to send her and her siblings to school. And according to her, “Karon amo na pong time na mo amuma sa iyaha.” Teresita’s words were a reminder of the sacrifices made by many in her mother’s generation.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Cabadbaran City – City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Officer Ms. Josephine Demoral. This collaborative effort highlighted the government’s unified approach to honoring our elders.

The Centenarian Program, established under Republic Act 10868, also known as the Centenarians Act of 2016, ensures that senior citizens who reach the age of 100 are celebrated and supported. This law is a testament to the nation’s commitment to its elderly, encouraging society to reflect on how it cares for its aging population.

DSWD Field Office Caraga emphasized the importance of family support in the longevity and well-being of elder citizens. The agency acknowledged the vital role that families play in nurturing and preserving the health of their elderly members, contributing significantly to their long lives. This recognition aims to inspire others to value and care for their elders, fostering a community that respects and honors its senior citizens.

Lola Gregoria’s life story is one of perseverance and dedication. Her journey from a hardworking fish vendor to a celebrated centenarian serves as an inspiration to all. The celebration of her 100th birthday was more than just a personal milestone; it was a communal acknowledgment of the value of life’s experiences and the wisdom that comes with age.

As Lola Gregoria received her award, the joy and pride were evident, especially from her family. It was a call to action for everyone to re-evaluate how they care for their elderly family members and to recognize the strength and resilience that comes with age.

Congratulations to Lola Gregoria Guibone and her loving family for this well-deserved recognition. Her story continues to inspire and remind us all of the importance of caring for and celebrating our elderly.
