At first glance, one would never imagine the exciting and incredible feats Miss Matlin has done or achieved. From her appearance, no one would ever imagine how adventurous and active she is. But for the Angels in Red Vests (ARV) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga, seeing her compete in physical activities, or catch her running errands, completing her tasks, is just a normal sight.

Matlin Esma, an Administrative Aide IV for the Protective Services Division, prides in her never-surrender attitude. Even as a person with a disability (above-the-knee amputation of left leg), Matlin never makes up excuses in delivering her workload. She even finds time engaging in extracurricular activities at the workplace. Zumba sessions, Fun Runs, mountain trekking adventures – these are but normal interests she enjoys with her fellow ARVs.

“Wala gyud naka apekto ang akong physical disability. Hinuon mao kini akong sumbanan sa akong pagserbisyo isip trabahanti sa DSWD (My physical disability never affected my ability to deliver my work. This even strengthened my drive in working at DSWD),” Matlin shares when asked if her condition has ever been a hindrance in her ability to function as a worker for the Department.

“Thankful ko sa akong mga kauban kay wala nila gi underestimate akong kapasidad – despite sa akong condition. Tungod ani, mas na-motivate ko to inspire others of my situation (I am very thankful to my colleagues that despite my condition, they never underestimated me. Because of this, i am even more motivated to inspire others),” Matlin added.

It is always inspiring to encounter stories of people’s passion, will, and determination, even if the odds are against them. The story of Matlin posts a significant question to everyone – WHAT IS YOUR EXCUSE NOT TO SUCCEED?

Matlin is a prime example of a DSWD ANGEL IN RED VEST. Everyday she inspires even with the adversities that she needs to overcome. She serves, because she knows she can.
